Is your toilet tank leaking? It is a common plumbing problem. The good news is you can fix it yourself. And no, it is not difficult. It can be done easily. If you want to know how to stop a leaking toilet tank, read on.
First thing first, you need to prepare. You will need these tools: rags, white vinegar, sponge, a screwdriver, small wire brush and adjustable wrench. Having a new spud washer and replacement tank bolt gaskets is also a good idea.
Start by turning off the shutoff valve. You need to be sure that the water is turned off before you start fixing the leak. Next, drain the water from your toilet tank. Flush and soak up remaining water in the tank using a sponge. On the underside of the tank bolt, you will find the nut. Use the adjustable wrench so you can hold it. After that, loose the tank bolt inside the tank with a screwdriver. Do the same thing to remove the second bolt.
Then, remove the tank from the bowl and lay the tank down. The next thing to do is to remove the old spud washer and insert a new one. Remove the tank bolts and gaskets, followed by thorough cleaning of the holes on the tank. Place the new gasket onto each bolt and be sure they are placed firmly. Insert these bolts through the holes in the bottom of the tank and reinstall the nuts. Lastly, reattach the tank.
